21 futbol style

Sunday afternoon taryne, stiner, jenny and I pulled out a futsal goal and had a grunt match. We took the classic basketball game of "21", revised the rules ever so slightly, and added a recognizably smaller ball with distinctively different material - oh, and we used our feet (in case you really didn't understand). Ok, so for those of you who don't know what 21 is: basically its one against all - whoever has the ball takes on the rest, each goal is 2 points, you get 3 oppurtunities to score from half court for 1 point each - think of it as an extra point conversation in american football x3, or like a three free throws in basketball - the first one to hit 21 wins. such a good number =).

The term FUTSAL is the international term used for the game. It is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "soccer", FUTbol or FUTebol, and the French or Spanish word for "indoor", SALon or SALa.

I have had symptons of the off-season blues - its been like two weeks since i've played soccer, sure I have been coaching and watching... but its just not the same - so on Monday night, everyone who was back in town met up in the gym after the men's volleyball match to kick the ball around. We played a little indoor- girls vs guys, and it was 5-1 before the boys came back to win - pretty impressive on the ladies part if you ask me. Despite a shot to each side of the head (thanks rigo and andy) it was a fun night.

SOFTBALL
yep, no lie, softball season has already started. we actually had a few scrimms before finals week, but the official start of the season was Monday. the alumni game is Saturday. it looks like i'll be playing centerfield for the most part this year - my freshman year I was anchored at left (I would actually prefer to stay put). its not my favorite sport, but it pays the bills (doesn't that sound horrible?) - and the company's not half bad. another bonus is that I get meals paid for until classes start/the caf' opens back up.

ROAD TRIP: SAN DIEGO

Jessica, my roomie, plays in an indoor soccer league down south and the team needed a couple more bodies so I took Teberg and we set off after softball practice Tuesday night for San Diego. Jess said it takes about 1 hour and 45 min to get to her place so the original plan was to leave between 5 and 6p after my soccer practice, but I had forgotten about softball so it set us back a few. Teberg and I hit up the In-N-Out on Chapman before we left (which ate more time) - the goal was to make it to SD to watch GILMORE GIRLS @ 8pm - the greatest show on earth, if you had forgotten (it finally returned to its new schedule this tuesday - I've been going through mad withdrawals) and then to rush over to the indoor complex to play at 9:20pm. Teberg and I departed the In-N-Out in Fullerton @ 7:02pm and were in Jessica's apartment on her couch watching GG in San Diego @ 8:08 - you do the math =)... so I sped a little - don't tell paps. Looking back I would be lying if I told you that Gilmore Girls was worth a traffic ticket. After the show we booked to the soccer complex, retrieved guest player passes as fast as you can say "we won"- the games fly by at 20 minutes a half. Kicking around is always a good time - we got back to Jessica's place around 11ish, Napoleon Dynamited some gatorades and chomped on some apple wedges and fell asleep to "kicking and screaming" - a movie where Will Ferrell is coaching his son's soccer team... let's just say it made me feel incredibly confident about how my first coaching season is going. The trip back to fullerton took twice as long.

The whole grocery shopping scene has grown on me. I stroll into Trader Joe's, pick up a bin and peruse the aisles to fulfill my handy dandy grocery list of various organic foods. The cooking doesn't really bother me either... but what's with dishes guys?? I've learned that washing dishes is a never ending process - especially when you've got two bowls and one pan BAH.... MEH.... BOO... ERR.... UGH. two words: TAKE OUT. yummy =). -just kidding mom, im still on the grocery plan.
