Given the game

Tonight was the men's turn: an oppurtunity to beat Master's and earn themselves a spot in the NCCAA National Tournament. Serena and I made a trip to Party City to buy blue and white face paint for the fans and it turned out pretty sweet. The guys team is always faithful to be our biggest fans on the sideline - singing original anthems to one keeping a beat on a drum - so we thought it our duty to do the same, although they were hard to match.

The first half ended scoreless. In the first handful of minutes of the second half the ref made an iffy call for Master's, granting them a penalty kick (which is almost the equivalent of giving the other team a goal for those of you who are not soccer fans - I still have hope for you though). Grant, the men's keeper, came up big with a save and the game remained 0-0. It was back and forth, back and forth, neither team really dominating either, but Masters did seem to struggle to keep up with the Royal's speed, skill, and intensity.

Mid second half Masters had a one on one situation with our last defender. Their attacker blatantly pushed our sweeper off the ball with arms extended, but he failed and instead he tumbled to the ground inside the 18 yard box. The ignorant Linesman raised his checkered flag in the air eagerly and YOU GUESSED IT the referree awarded the clumsy Forward with another penalty kick. This time Masters was able to finish this goal that was handed to them on a platter with nicely posed parcely.

On the sideline we were infuriated and all riled. We had previously been kicked off one of the sides and told to remain in a certain section of the spectator area. You could move us but you couldn't shut us up - we continued to chant and heckle. Finally in the 93rd minute of stopage time, Nik headed the ball into the back of the net off of a beautiful driven ball across the 18. All of us went nuts, jumping into the air and screaming at the top of our lungs. The ref blew his whistle which announced the end of regulation time.

Both teams endured into the second overtime without scoring. It was the in the last 30 seconds of the final overtime that masters managed to score a goal that was less fascinating then the PK that was wrongfully credited to them. MASTERS WAS GIVEN THE GAME, there's nothing more to say really, with the exception of a quote from one of the spectators at the conclusion of the game:

"not good enough to win... but too good to lose"

heck yes we have spirit!

josh looks like the phantom of the opera
