College Church of Wheaton

this is a picture of a chapel building @ Wheaton College that looks undoubtedly similar to College Church, a non-denominational body just a minute walk away.

I'm staying with the Chessum family this week in Wheaton and we attended College Church yesterday. It comes complete with a piercing Organ piano, high liturgy, hymns, the Lord's Prayer, the Apostle's Creed, a benediction, scripture reading, everyone in their sunday best, and not a car under $30,000 in the parking lot ($40,000 if it weren' t for the mini-vans).

About the scripture reading... so this is my second time at College Church and you'd think I would have all the stand ups, sit downs, open hymnals, read alouds and the not read alouds down (they do have a "worship folder" adorned with astirisks and a key). So a younger guy stands up at the pulpit and informs us to open to I Peter 1-2 for a scripture reading. He then waits patiently as everyone turns in their respective bibles to the correct reference - this is probably the maximum amount of time that College Church allows an intern to stand up at the mic during a Sunday morning service. I can only imagine how stoked this guy is when he writes on his resume that he was the "scripture reading dude at college church." When everyone is in their postured standing scripture reading position, he then begins to read aloud... and I begin to read aloud... but no one else begins to read aloud - OOPS! Weird thing is: I wasn't embarrassed, I actually thought it was pretty comical, because I had almost made the same mistake the week before. Jessica, on the other hand, must have been embarrassed for me because she laughed hysterically, and with endurance - it lasted up into the introduction of the sermon. Thanks, Jess. I guess I'm glad I can entertain. Later that evening my amigo KB told me that she had done the same thing.
