CHRISTIAN BALE stars as Jack Kelly, a young man with a past who becomes the leader of the striking newsboys. On Entertainment Weekly's 1999 It List, Christian recently starred in the NBC telefilm "Mary, Mother of Jesus" as Jesus of Nazareth. He is currently filming "Shaft" with director John Singleton while his controversial film "American Psycho" (rated R) is set to premiere on April 14, 2000 - almost exactly 8 years after the premiere of "Newsies."
Christian married his girlfriend, Sandra, in January 2000.
Born in Wales and raised in England, Bale began acting in school plays. His professional career began at age 10 with the role of an American boy in the West End stage production of The Nerd. This led to participation in workshops in London and roles in Heart of the Country (a BBC miniseries), The Land of Faraway (a Swedish/Russian fairy tale), and the made-for-television epic Anastasia.
In 1987, Bale made his feature film debut in Steven Spielberg's Empire Of The Sun in the lead role of Jim, the English schoolboy. He followed this with roles such as Kenneth Branagh's production of Shakespeare's Henry V and the TNT adaptation of the classic Treasure Island.
Bale's other films include Swing Kids, Little Women (as Laurie), The Secret Agent, and Pocahontas. His last two films were the critically acclaimed Velvet Goldmine and William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
